PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

SARPOL RP17 is a ceramic-filled epoxy with an extremely smooth finish that results in a high gloss, low coefficient of friction ideal for protecting against abrasion and turbulence at typical dry service operating temperatures from -30 °C to 90 °C. Used individually, SARPOL RP17 is recommended for sealing and protecting equipment from corrosion. It is also used as a layer to be applied over SARO coatings for applications requiring surface reconstruction and durable protection. Typical applications include making an abrasion-resistant coating: repairing heat exchangers and condensers, aligning tanks, chutes, repositioning and repairing rudder housings, also repairing cooling pumps and throttle valves.

For information on the safe handling of this product, consult the safety data sheet (SDS).

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Surface Preparation

A surface preparation is important for long-term product performance. Parameters may vary depending on the severity of the application, expectations for durability, and initial conditions of the substrates to be treated.

  1. Remove any dirt, oil, grease etc. with a suitable detergent.
  2. Every irregularity, splash or weld witness and every other surface roughness, must be leveled and flattened; every indentation or porosity must be grouted and leveled. Every protrusion, edge or joint, must be leveled with a minimum radius of 3mm and every corner must also be rounded with the same characteristics.
  3. Sandblast the entire surface to be treated with an angular grit to a roughness of 50-70 microns, and a blasting grade close to White Metal (SIS SA 2½ /SSPC-SP 10). For immersion applications, a blasting grade equal to White Metal is required (SIS SA 3/SSPC-SP 5).
  4. After blasting, the metal surface should be cleaned with a residue-free cleaner or solvent to remove dust and contaminants. Clean, dry compressed air can also be used to remove dust and contaminants. The surface should be coated before reoxidation occurs.

Mode of Application:

  1. Film thickness for coating: 200-300 micron. It is recommended to apply a minimum of 2 layers to avoid micro-pitting.
  2. Application temperature for surface and environment: 15-30 °C.
  3. Relative humidity: <85 %; Surface temperature should always be above the dew point by at least 3 °C.

Second coats should be done once the product layer is gellified but not cured, within the “overcoating time.” If this time is exceeded, the surface should be abraded lightly and cleaned with a solvent to remove residue.

Check:

    • When the application is just completed, visually check for untreated porosity.
    • Once the coating has cured, repeat the visual inspection to confirm the absence of untreated areas and porosity or mechanical damage.
    • Check the coating thickness, above all in critical areas.

Caution: Use an approved positive-pressure air respirator when welding or cutting near the cured compound. Do not use open flame on the compound.

Repairs

Any untreated area or porosity or area with little thickness detected should be restored or repaired by applying additional product, after light abrasion and cleaning of the surface.

Cleaning

Clean equipment immediately after use with a solvent such as acetone or isopropyl alcohol. Once cured, the product can only be removed mechanically.
